Primary School | PreK-K

Beginning with a strong foundation

Step into one of our Primary School classrooms and you will hear the hum of happy students, and feel the energy of eager learners. Our experienced teachers believe in the development of the whole child, and carefully design lessons in which reading, math, language development, art, social studies, science, and multicultural education are joined.  Using thematic, hands-on activities our Pre-K and Kindergarten students learn best and grow their understanding of the world around them through exploration, connection, and discovery.

Above all else, there is always a strong emphasis on friendship, cooperation and kindness.

Pre-K: Did You Know?

  • We keep daily journals to capture and share thoughts, experiences and observations
  • We build confidence through performing in an original class play and participating in school assemblies
  • Children have the option to stay for a full day until 3pm at no additional charge
  • Weekly specialty classes include Music, Physical Education, Woodworking, and Library
  • Hands on math is a daily activity through sorting, cooking, counting and measuring
  • We tackle topics in science through a combination of outdoor explorations, weekly discovery walks and hands on experimentation
  • Children build awareness of themselves and others through the creation of portrait portfolios
  • The Alphabet Museum becomes the children’s tribute to their multi media study of letters

Kindergarten: Did You Know?

  • In class meetings and Open Circle, we role-play social issues that are important to the life of a Kindergartner
  • We use small learning groups with direct instruction to develop foundation skills for emerging readers and writers
  • Kindergartners connect directly with role models and share a special relationship with 8th Graders through the Big Buddy/Little Buddy program
  • The whole class participates in at least two community service projects during the year
  • Kindergartners enjoy DCD’s tradition of a “family style” lunch
  • Specialty classes include Music, Physical Education, Woodworking, Creative Movement, Library, Science, Art, and Yoga
  • Our Author of the Month study doesn’t just involve reading and writing but includes science, cooking and art!
  • We build confidence in speaking in front of a group with an original class play and active participation whole school assemblies
  • We write and receive Pen Pal letters all year long
  • We visit the computer lab weekly and use iPads and Smartboards in the classroom
