DCD and Horizons: An Afternoon of Connection

On Wednesday, February 19th, DCD 8th grade students had an unusual break from their typical afternoon filled with academic classes.  They had an opportunity to host a group of middle school students from DCD’s Horizons program for an afternoon of camaraderie and connection.

DCD’s walls are quite familiar to both communities of students, yet their paths never cross. Meeting in the Valentine Center, students and teachers gathered for a pizza lunch, introductions and some ice-breaking games. The kids seemed to enjoy playing the ‘Truth About Me’ – a game about revealing one’s interests, attributes, and passions and seeing who in the group shared something in common. The kids put their heads together during team trivia, answering questions about geography, music, history, and sports. Team “Cow” emerged victoriously!

The rest of the afternoon was divided up into activity blocks where smaller groups of students could partake in different activities together involving cornhole, cooking, art, and technology. Horizons Program Director Haris Kuljancic and DCD Middle School Head Nate Buffum have been eager to partner together for some time and seized the opportunity during the public-school February break to make this happen. The students seemed to enjoy each other bonding and building new friendships during these three hours of fun activities. The Horizons teachers and the DCD teachers had a bit of fun too!
