Do you think the groundhog will see his shadow? This was yesterday’s question of the day for Mrs. Maloney’s Kindergarten class. She instructed the class to stand up if they thought we would have six more weeks of winter, and several children bounded into the air.
One student exclaimed, “Honey Nugget says yes!” in reference to the class stuffed animal, a golden retriever puppy, who is gifted to a different student to be taken care of each week. Next, everyone learned a Groundhog Day song teaching about seasonal changes, the environment, and calendar awareness. Everyone hunched under their work tables and jumped up like groundhogs while they sang and laughed together.
As of this morning, the groundhog Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow, predicting six more weeks of winter. It turns out Honey Nugget was right!
For the rest of the week, Mrs. Maloney’s class will do groundhog themed reading and math activities including CVC (consonant, vowel, consonant) puzzles, memory games with sight words, and counting games up to twenty. At DCD, kindergarteners are invited to learn about the world and grow their understanding through exploration, connection, and discovery!
