This morning at Lower School Assembly, our Grade 4 students had the opportunity to share their entrepreneurial spirit as they presented the businesses they created over the summer as part of a special Grade 4 tradition at DCD—Starting a Business!

Over the course of three consecutive days, students spent at least an hour each day developing their businesses, putting their creativity and independence into action. From products to services, each student created a business based on something they are personally interested in, bringing their ideas to life through creativity and hard work. They kept a journal throughout the process, documenting their work and reflecting on their experiences—including what they found challenging, rewarding, and surprising along the way. Students also tracked their finances, keeping records of expenses, profits, and losses, including the costs involved in getting their businesses up and running. Finally, they designed a presentation showcasing their work.

These projects offered Grade 4 students invaluable real-world practice in planning, budgeting, marketing, organization, and time management, while also teaching them how to balance their work with the importance of enjoying their summer. Many students developed a real passion for their enterprises, often involving their families in the process. At the end of the project, students had the opportunity to give back by choosing a charity to support—reinforcing the values of generosity and community that are so important at DCD.

Student projects this year included bake sales, yard work, gardening, craft making, fishing and fencing lessons, and a sports equipment drive, just to name a few!
