Fifth Grader Charlie Volpe, a finalist last year, won this year’s spelling bee on Monday, February 25, by correctly spelling the word “hygiene.”

The runner-up finalist, after six rounds, was fellow Fifth Grader Angela Giordano. Sixth Grader Jared Price was also a finalist.

The other contestants were Charlie Sinnott and Liam Wilson (Grade 4), Annabel Haggerty (Grade 6), Mimi Cabot and Maggie Swanson (Grade 7), and Camille Fougere and Elliot Nichols (Grade 8).

During the final round, the two Fifth Grade finalists had a lengthy competition, correctly spelling such words as “accommodate,” “vacillate,” “outrageous,” and “vivacious.”
