This morning, participants tested their extensive knowledge in DCD’s annual Geography Bee! Now in its fourth year, the DCD Geography Bee has become a tradition where students compete in mixed grade teams in Jeopardy style trivia. Organized by Camille Harrison, Nancy Barre and Jim Pinola, this year’s theme was Asia, with the following categories: rivers, capital cities, language and culture, landmarks, physical features, place name origins, famous people, and borders.

The Lowell Center was humming with anticipation as parents, students, faculty and staff were welcomed and the Geography Bee buzzed into action! Four teams faced off, each with five students representing grades four through eight, composed of top scorers from a preliminary quiz that took place prior to the event. Mr. Pinola emceed the competition, while Mrs. Harrison ran the Jeopardy board, and Ms. Barre, Ms. Alphonse-Crean and Mr. Buffum moderated and kept score.

In the first round, Team 4 was the first on the board with the following question, “The capital of this Southeast Asian city-state is synonymous with its name”, in which they answered correctly, “What is Singapore?” Throughout the competition, students from each team took turns choosing a category and answering the question. There were many challenging questions, such as: “The world’s largest inland body of water, this lies between Europe and Asia, bounded by Kazakhstan, Russia, Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan, and Iran, it has traditionally been a main source for authentic wild sturgeon caviar”, to, “This is the holiest river in India”; and, “This enormous temple complex in Cambodia was built by the Khmer people in 1150 CE and is depicted on the Cambodian national flag.”

As the rounds progressed, the anticipation and suspense grew, in a close competition! In the final round, Team 4 became victorious as the winning team of the Geography Bee with the final question, “The international border that runs through the Kashmir region splits Kashmir into a part governed by India and a part governed by this country”, to which they answered correctly, “What is Pakistan?”

Thank you to Mrs. Harrison, Ms. Barre and Mr. Pinola for organizing the Geography Bee, and to Ms. Alphonse-Crean and Mr. Buffum for moderating, and to the entire DCD community who came to cheer on and support our impressive participants!
