DCD was “a buzz” this morning for the 2025 Spelling Bee! 14 students in grades 3-8 competed in an exciting and challenging contest. Mr. Edie presided over the DCD Spelling Bee with “silent letter” themed words, such as “descend”, “glisten”, “champagne”, “succumb”, “discipline” and “fascinate”. Round after round, DCD students showed their superb knowledge with correctly spelled words, as the audience clapped and cheered, filling the Lowell Center with encouragement and support!

The competition was impressive, and as contestants one by one were eliminated, the level of difficulty increased, as did the energy and cheers from the audience!

After many challenging rounds, the competition went into a “tie breaker” round with three final contestants, Austin Connors in Grade 3, Coleman Burch in Grade 5, and Alex Zhao in Grade 6. Mr. Edie read a word, and each student had 15 seconds to write down the word, which included “spaghetti”, “Wednesday” and, in the third round, “February”. In the fourth and final round, with just two contestants left, Coleman and Alex were presented with the most challenging word of all, “rhinoceros”, where Alex Zhao emerged as the 2025 winner. Congratulations to all of our incredible spellers for a tremendous job well done!
