To accompany their reading of I Am Malala, the 6th Grade Humanities Mini-term is diving deep into a study of personal activism. First, students move between a series of stations, stopping at each one to study an image of a protest or other form of activism. Then, they offer their written response to the image on the poster itself, perhaps exploring the feelings evoked by the image or reacting to the words left by their peers. After spending some time discussing as a group the variety of causes to which different people feel called to advocate, students turn their own values into a tangible work of activist art— a poster, showcasing a personally chosen cause, which they present in a gallery-walk at the end of the week.
