This week, Grade 5 students faced off in the annual Athens/Sparta Debate—a beloved DCD Grade 5 tradition! Representing the rival city-states, teams debated topics related to military and government, women, daily life, childhood and education, and arts and architecture.
Each side delivered opening statements, then jumped into a lively exchange of questions and rebuttals. Students responded quickly and confidently, using strong reasoning and knowledge from their studies to defend their city-state’s values and perspectives.
This immersive experience challenges students to think critically, speak confidently, and understand viewpoints from a different time and culture.
After two very spirited debates—one for each of the fifth-grade classes, Sparta was victorious for Mrs. Chiari’s Group, and Athens was victorious for Mrs. Bemis’s group. Congratulations, Athens and Sparta!
