My favorite thing about DCD is my super talented, kind, and goofy students.
I am passionate about woodworking as a transformative practice. I aim to facilitate exploration of the medium of wood in a way that enables confidence, patience, teamwork, and resilience both in addition to and through skill development. Questions I consider constantly in my practice are: How does our work in the shop connect us with the natural world? How can I use woodworking as a tool for social change? In what ways does 3D art have its own developmental trends (separate from visual art)? How do those trends align with the life skills I aim to teach? What skills can students take from woodshop that they will use for years to come?
My journey as a woodworker began in 2008 while working as a shop monitor at the Colorado College 3D Arts Studio. It was there I learned from my mentors Andy Tirado and Scott Johnson about machine maintenance, safety, and fundamental woodworking techniques. It was also there that I discovered my passion for helping others craft their artistic visions into reality. Since then, I have worked in the sculpture shop at Columbia University, in finish carpentry for a small contractor in Newport, RI, and taken workshops at the North Bennett Street School and Center for Furniture Craftsmanship. Most recently I have had the opportunity to teach adults at the Wooden Boat School, Center for Furniture Craftsmanship and the Herresshoff Marine Museum.
