DCD Middle School students swept the Wood category at the annual SISAL (Small Independent School Art League) juried show, receiving First, Second, and Third Place awards and two Honorable Mentions at the awards ceremony on April 7, 2013.
There was a new format for the exhibit this year. For the first time, Sixth Graders were able to submit work to be included in the show and juried by a panel of artists.
Grades 6–8 showed their work at the Carroll School in Lincoln, competing against other Middle School students from local independent schools. The Winsor School hosted the exhibit of work by students in Grades 9–12.
Overall, DCD had two First Place winners, Katie Giordano in the Wood category and Alyssa Landry for Fiber.
Second Place Awards went to Isabella Collins for her earring and bracelet set in the Jewelry category, Spencer Beakey for his wooden spoon in the Wood category, and Annabel Haggerty for Fiber.
Third Place winners were Emily Shaughnessy in Jewelry, Susan Rowley in Wood, Lourdes Hicks in Painting, and Erin McKay in Mixed Media. Rebecca Barnes and Julia Cochran received honorable mentions for their work in the Wood category.
Thirteen schools participated in this year’s competition. DCD submitted 46 pieces to the show, and our students received 9 of the 33 awards granted for First, Second, and Third Place. These award-winning pieces will be among the art works displayed during Gallery Week at DCD, April 22–26.
