The game was ne’er so fair! In Mr. Thacher’s Grade 8 English class, students wrap up their study of Romeo and Juliet with a self-directed final project, allowing them not only to demonstrate their understanding of the play, but also to showcase their own creativity. This year’s projects spanned a wide range of formats, including comic books, ceramic creations, live performances, YouTube videos, and even a board game.

When 8th grader Maren Ouellette debuted her original creation “In Fair Verona: a Romeo and Juliet Card Game,” it wasn’t long before the entire class had become engrossed in the game— so much so that they decided to take their lunch back to the classroom to keep the competition going! With the goal of players getting married (and staying married for five rounds, despite the conflicts arising around them), Maren’s game not only displayed her clear understanding of the central themes of the play, but also gave her classmates a chance to get in on the fun.

“We’re going to play the card: Friar’s Vacation,” said one team, as the room erupted in disappointed groans. “No one can get married in the next round.”

Another team slapped down their card. “We’re playing: Will You Walk? We challenge you to a duel!”

As the sound of dice clattered across the table, the game went on, and the students huddled around the table as they enjoyed this one-of-a-kind final presentation.

Thanks to Mr. Thacher for giving students the creative space to showcase their learning, and kudos to all of our incredible students for their incredible work!
