In the days leading up to Spring Break, DCD’s pre-K students welcomed their parents and families into Huntington House for the highly anticipated Alphabet Museum! This beloved project kicked off in January with the alphabet collection unit, an annual tradition that seamlessly blends math readiness, language skills, and pre-reading fundamentals. Each morning during meeting time, the class explores the letter of the day, with students taking turns to present their letter “item” brought from home, an exercise that encourages public speaking skills as pre-K students describe their items using complete sentences and descriptive details.
The alphabet unit goes beyond simple letter recognition and incorporates various educational elements to include sorting activities where students categorize their letter “items”, enhancing classification skills; mathematical observations where students make numerical connections with their collected items; and practice estimation, where students guess the number of categories and chart the various categories onto a large alphabet graph.
The highlight of this unit is the creation of individual Alphabet Notebooks, showcasing each student’s winter work in a very special presentation at the Pre-K Alphabet Museum, where Huntington House is transformed into a vibrant display of alphabet-themed activities! Parents and families enjoyed a presentation of the children’s Alphabet Notebooks, a personalized tour of the classroom museum, and a delightful performance of pre-K’s favorite alphabet songs.
This special event not only celebrates the children’s hard work but also provides a glimpse into the engaging, hands-on curriculum that defines the pre-K experience at DCD.
