This week, Ms. Bemis’s fifth graders visited Pre-K students at Huntington House to share their creative writing and artistic talents, by presenting animal myth books they had written and illustrated over the winter.

During this creative writing unit, the fifth-grade students drew inspiration from reading various selections of myths from around the world, using their imagination to craft engaging stories. Examples of their creative works included tales like “Why Does a Snail Move So Slowly?” and “How Did the Bee Get its Stinger?” as well as “How Did the Ladybug Get its Spots?” These stories were developed by brainstorming common animal characteristics and weaving them into imaginative narratives about how these traits came to be.

As fifth graders and Pre-K students paired off into small reading groups, it was a cozy morning of storytelling! The younger students loved the imaginative stories, while the fifth graders gained confidence as they shared their works, reading out loud to their audience. It was a fun morning for all!

At DCD, we foster a sense of community between our youngest students and older students, and it’s always a special shared experience that creates wonderful memories!
