This morning at Lower School Assembly, third graders showcased engaging ways to practice math by demonstrating fun mental math games. At DCD, third graders frequently practice math facts, including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, using interactive methods that make learning fun!

First Ms. Sinclair’s math group came up to demonstrate “Math War”, a fun spin on the war card game, where students can have fun while practicing addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. In “Math War”, both players simultaneously flip over the top card from their respective stacks and place it face up in the center, and the goal is to be the first to correctly solve the math operation involving the two cards.

Next, Ms. Mill’s students demonstrated “Back to Back”, where two students stand back-to-back and write a number on the board that they can see but their opponent can’t. A third student calls out the answer to a math problem using the two numbers, like “the product is 30” or “the sum is 11.” The first student to identify their opponent’s number is the winner!

Ms. Hultgren’s students then demonstrated “Around the World”, a fun fast-paced mental math game where players compete to solve addition and multiplication problems quickly, advancing through a circle of players by answering correctly, and be the first to “travel around the world”!

Ms. Hultgren then got the entire audience on their feet as she demonstrated “Skunk”, a fun dice game of chance, that involves two dice, and addition! Each letter of “skunk” represents a different round of the game, and play begins with the “S”  and continues through the “K”, where the object is to accumulate the greatest possible point total over the five rounds, without rolling a “1”! The Rand Gym was buzzing as students were on their feet practicing math facts together, and it was a fun and interactive game of chance to start the day!
