Dedham Country Day School incoming fourth-grader Laurel Fireman of Needham has been getting lots of attention for her summer business project.

Meant to teach students about entrepreneurship and designed to foster math skills, DCD’s fourth-grade summer business project is also about community service.

Laurel set up a business called “Commute Fruit,” and has been selling oranges and bananas at the Needham Center train station this week. She is donating the money she makes (and any extra fruit) to the Needham Community Council.

Her project has been very well-received by the town and caught the attention of the Channel 5 news team who interviewed her for a segment, which will be aired at noon today, June 27.

According to her mom, Clair Windsor, all of the fruit for sale has been donated by local grocery stores, so her expenses were almost nothing, and she’s raised close to $300 already!

Good job, Laurel!
