The snow-covered fields are no hindrance to the spring athletic season at DCD! On the first day back from spring break, middle school students hopped out of their cars armed with lacrosse sticks, baseball gloves, and tennis racquets. Taking advantage of our gym spaces and area indoor tennis courts, teams began prepping for interscholastic competition set to begin in just a few weeks.

Middle school students, with their three-season mandatory sports participation, don’t miss a beat. Just before the break, we celebrated the completion of the winter season in which we fielded boys and girls basketball teams at the JV, Varsity, and 6th-grade level, a coed squash team, and a coed hockey team. To mark the end of each athletic season, we hold a special all-school assembly where coaches and students give team highlights, and awards are given to the most improved athlete on each team and a captain’s award is given to the student on each team who has demonstrated leadership, sportsmanship, and exemplary skill throughout the season. Team captains have an opportunity to speak on behalf of their teammates as they acknowledge their coaches and share anecdotes from the season.

Not only does this special assembly celebrate our middle school athletes, but it serves as a showcase for the younger students to learn about their potential path as athletes and team members throughout their DCD journey. They have an opportunity to see all the different sports teams that are available to them which provides a  context for all the work they are doing in their own P.E. classes whether it be developing skills for a specific sport, building coordination, learning sportsmanship or exercising for a healthy life!
