Eighth grader Kathryn Cloonan gains valuable lessons in philanthropy

At a recent assembly, eighth grader Kathryn Cloonan gave a presentation on her experience last summer workting at Youth In Philanthropy, an organization for teenagers who are looking to make a positive impact on their communities.
The program introduces students to the importance of active community involvement. Along the way participants discover a keen awareness of their own potential and develop the skills necessary to become successful leaders. Participants work as a team to award a grant to the nonprofit of their choice. Led by Youth in Philanthropy instructors, students learn how to evaluate local nonprofit organizations and develop their own leadership skills through fun group exercises, hear from professional expert guest speakers about real-world skills including how to create a resume or balance a checkbook, work on team-building skills to award a donation to the nonprofit of their choice, spend a full day of site visits to local nonprofit organizations, and present their nonprofit donation choice to a panel for approval.
