The purpose of the Community Affairs branch of the PA is to encourage a strong sense of community among DCD’s diverse group of families. Community Affairs promotes connections among DCD parents and works toward the goal of ensuring that the School has a strong and positive presence in the broader community.
Parent volunteers from pre-K through grade 5, in conjunction with the service-learning coordinators, assist teachers and students complete community service projects in Dedham and surrounding towns by providing logistical support and encouraging student involvement.
Students from all grades have an opportunity to participate in at least two age-appropriate projects every year. Interested parents must attend one meeting per month throughout the school year. Community service projects from past years have included a Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. service morning, sorting clothes and toys at Cradles to Crayons, a Fun Run for Dedham Animal Rescue League, assembling Thanksgiving baskets to benefit the Dedham Food Pantry, making coloring books for the children’s pediatric ward at Massachusetts General Hospital, creating welcome bags for residents of the Walker School, and organizing book drives to benefit Horizons and the Italian Home.
The PIN representative is a DCD parent who attends four meetings during the school year and is responsible for communicating information from these meetings to the DCD parent community. PIN is a volunteer group of parents whose children are students at New England-area independent schools. PIN was formed to help parents share ideas and promote worthy programs at these independent schools. Following each meeting, the DCD PIN representative reports back to the PA and provides parents with access to important information via the DCD website.
The term of a PIN representative is two years. If you are interested in education, being a PIN representative will help you expand your network with other independent schools in New England.
