Jake Daniels emerged victorious after several rounds of questions in the final competition of DCD's National Geographic Bee, which was held on Monday, January 25, 2010.
Over the past two months, students from Grades 4-8 have taken part in the competition, which is sponsored by the National Geographic Society, eventually narrowing the field to two representatives from each grade.
At the finals on Monday, Jake emerged as the school champion by correctly answering "Greece" to the question, Which Mediterranean country, located at the southern end of the Balkan Peninsula, is Europe's largest exporter of cotton? Fifth Grader David Leder of Westwood was the runner-up.
Jake will now join winners from across the state in taking a qualifying written test to determine whether he will progress to the state-level Bee to be held in the spring at Clark University in Worcester. The winner of each state-level Bee will then advance to the national competition in Washington, DC, and the chance to receive a $25,000 college scholarship.
