Each year a number of DCD faculty members offer weeklong summer specialty programs appealing to a wide range of student interests. Children can learn to dance, paint, make an i-Movie, craft furniture in the woodshop, play games in the gym, or get ready for field hockey season, all under the able direction of DCD faculty members. Contact the individual teachers for more information.
Picasso to Pollock: Art History for Young Artists–Caroline Swan
This program focuses on teaching young children the history behind some of the great artistic masterpieces as well as the techniques used by the individual artists. Each day students will explore the works and styles of a particular artist, such as Warhol, Picasso, Pollock, Monet, Van Gogh, Miro, Matisse, Klimt, O’Keefe and many others. Following an overview of the artist’s work, the children will delve into the hands-on process of creating some of their own masterpieces based on the study of the featured artist. The students will also be introduced to new techniques, such as painting with acrylics on canvas, blending watercolors, drawing with oil pastels, and creating with cut paper. By week’s end, the students will have individual portfolios containing their own finished pieces of artwork, as well as information about the many artists explored during the weeklong workshop.
